Get In An Accident? Act Fast Before The Tow Truck Arrives

If you have been in an accident that was caused by someone else and you have to call a tow truck to come get your vehicle, there are a few things you want to do before the tow truck arrives. This is to ensure you aren't going to have a problem filing the claim with their insurance company and yours, and so you have proof the damage wasn't done by you.

Have Photos Taken

Have photos taken of the vehicle not only to show what damages are done, but also where the vehicle is at after the accident to show exactly where the accident took place. If you had to move the vehicle from its original location, take a picture of the tire marks or other markings to show where it was. These details may be needed to show how the accident occurred later in court.

You also want to take a picture of the other driver's insurance card, their license plate, and their vehicle. You want to make sure they are who they say they are, and that they don't try to change the story.

Call the Police

It doesn't matter how small or severe the accident is, or what the other driver wants, you want the police to see your vehicle and make a report before your vehicle is towed away. You may have to use this in court, and they police may catch eye witnesses that were at the scene when the accident happened.

Ask Tow Companies about Security

When you start calling around to find a towing company, ask about the lot security. Find a location that has a fenced in yard, or have the vehicle taken to an auto repair shop that has a secured parking lot. You may have to use the black box in your vehicle as evidence for your case, and you want to make sure that it isn't tampered with.

You should also tell the tow truck company what type of damage there is to the vehicle, in case they need to bring special tools to the scene of the accident to get the vehicle on the bed. If you are worried about finding a tow truck company you can trust, you'll want to call your insurance provider to get recommendations. If you have to pay upfront for the tow, but you will get reimbursed later on, make sure you get a receipt from the company and make a copy of it.
